MCN prepares to launch Wavelet Technology

Ottawa, ON - January 29, 2007

MCN Sports, a wholly owned subsidiary of MCN, today announced that wavelet based video compression technology is currently in active development.

Peter Gervais, Vice-President of Engineering for MCN, says "Wavelet is a type of video codec (encoder/decoder) that is specifically designed to be utilized with the Internet. It has several advantages over other compression techniques as follows."

  • More resilient if packets are lost during transmission.
  • An infinite number of lower-resolution streams can easily be decoded from a single 'parent' stream.
  • Lower bandwidth usage.
  • Capable of handling high-definition broadcasts.

Gervais adds, "Wavelet will be the cornerstone of our peer-to-peer network development and will put MCN at the forefront of streaming technology."
